On Saturday, Sept 18th, HVRPCA members conducted a community service event to honor America’s first and mostly forgotten Veterans by cleaning the headstones of Revolutionary War Patriots and their families. The event took place at the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery adjacent to the Hopewell Reformed Church in Hopewell Junction. Cleaning supplies and protective gear were donated by HVRPCA and Williams Lumber.
Sharing quality time on a beautiful day, HVRPCA teams of two successfully realized their objective of cleaning two headstones per team. Bob Farrell, HVPCA Director At Large, coordinated the entire effort, provided historical background, identified eligible headstones and supervised the cleaning.
It was a satisfying day for the participants. Headstone phrases and information revealed as a result of the cleaning imparted context and connectivity to our ancestors, their heroic efforts and their sacrifices. HVRPCA looks forward to offering future similar opportunities for members to connect with the past while working together in the present. Our thanks to everyone who participated!
The driving tour will depart from Taste of NY, 4640 Taconic Pkwy N at 9:30 am. Signed PCA liability waivers are required and will be distributed/collected at the Taste of NY mandatory drivers meeting. The detail route map and written route instructions will also be provided at the drivers meeting. For those going directly to to Aerodrome, reserved parking will be available from noon.
