Unobtanium Open House - September 5th

Posted on August 7th, 2015 12:42 PM by Jeff Kriz

This sent in by Adam Wright of the Unobtanium Porsche restorer in Ravena, NY:

Unobtanium Open House
Saturday, September 5th, 2015
12pm to 3pm

I want to invite everyone out to our 2nd Annual Open House at our location in scenic Ravena, NY. We have finally moved our whole operation from the old leather factory in Gloversville, NY. Cars that have not seen the light of day in over a decade are now back in the sun.

There is plenty of parking that is super safe as the Police Station is the only other building on our dead end street. We encourage everyone to bring their Porsche, but if you can't please bring yourself and a few friends. We will have food and drink on hand and the Unobtanium crew of Adam, Matt, and Big John will be there to answer any questions. We might even talk Big John into doing some feats of great strength!

The warehouse normally has 15-20 early Porsche projects to look at as well as shelf after shelf of parts for all your restoration needs. You won't be disappointed if Porsche 356's and early 9 series cars are your passion. In addition, some of our personal collection will be on hand like the 356 A Coupe that won Daytona in 1966. You can also check out the latest shop project - we are converting a 914-6 into a 904 using a real 904 body!

We are hoping Wray from Proshaper can come out with the latest metal he is shaping for our aluminum 550 Spyder project. His website is http://www.proshaper.com if you want to check out his work.

If you want to see pics from last year's open house you can check them out on our blog:

https://unobtaniuminc.wordpress.com/

Last year we lined the street in so many Porsches you would have thought you were in Germany! The shop address is:

Unobtanium
14 W Shore St.
Ravena, NY 12143
518-705-1355
Hope to see you there!

Event went very well as 52 members showed up, some of them first timers.  Ron Schaeffer took over as Head Chef and turned out some delicious dogs & burgers to complement the many snacks and goodies that our generous attendees brought along.

Again we have to thank the Florio's for making their facility open to the membership along with providing the grill facility.  A good time was had by all and the region had a great kick off for the summer driving season.

Registation OPEN for our DEs at Lime Rock and Watkins Glen

Posted on July 22nd, 2013 11:32 PM by Kevin Challacombe

35.jpg

Dear Drivers:

Registration is now OPEN for our July 29, 2013 event at LRP as well as our Aug 28-29, 2013 Driving Into Fall DE at WGI.

As always our events at Lime Rock are not shared with the Lime Rock Club.

Our Driving Into Fall event at Watkins Glen will offer a unique format with only two run groups (assigned at registration time) and sessions that vary in duration. There will be something for everyone by offering both Driver's School and Open Track with lots of track time for both. We'll be inviting BMW club drivers and others, so there will be opportunity to make new friends and drive with makes other than Porsche. Those who have run with our Region before know that we offer a relaxed, low key event. Since this is a new event for us, we expect to have 50-60 drivers so we estimate the run groups will be empty with lots of passing opportunities.

OPEN TRACK RULES:

  • The Open Track sessions will be run with Driver's Education rules, however, there will be open passing with a signal anywhere the track is straight.
  • Approved instructors can ride or take passengers at any time. Unapproved instructors and regular open track participants cannot. Approved instructors may or may not be utilized instructors for this event.
  • Open track participants are typically Black and Red drivers

INSTRUCTED STUDENTS:

  • This group will be Green/Yellow (Novice) drivers, some with in-car instructors, and others approved for solo.
  • White (intermediate) drivers will be assigned this run group until signed off for open track.

OPEN TRACK APPLICATION:

  • Applicants must provide references from their Region or Organization's chief instructor
  • At the event, a checkout ride can be requested for promotion to Open Track Participant status.
  • Registrations are not assignable.

June 30 Storm King Art Center trip - RSVP Today

Posted on June 19th, 2013 3:11 PM by Allen Littlefield

31.jpg

I need to have feedback for a headcount of those interested in a visit to the Storm King Art Center on Sunday the 30th of June. After the tour we will drive to the new Cafe at Orange County Choppers which has a nice reasonably priced menu and will hold a group of tables for us. Pat & I visited on Sat. and were very pleased with the venue.

Cost of the tour is $12 for adult, $10 for seniors and $8 for students with i.d. card. If we get enough people we will be assigned a docent to conduct the tour. There are also open trollies that will take us from area to area as the center covers many acres. This is the place you can see from the thruway below Newburgh. Since this is all outdoors we will call it off if it is raining.

Please use our events page RSVP at http://hvpca.clubstore.us.com/index.php?cPath=500000. As the date is not that far off I suggest you RSVP as soon as possible if you are interested.

JLG Autocrib Roundup

Posted on June 10th, 2013 11:01 PM by Allen Littlefield

30.jpg

What a great day after the threat of rain from the storm. Only 16 of us showed up for this great tour. We were greeted with a sign with our new logo on it made by Kim the great assistant that the Gish family has working for them. We then had a choice of a Mimosa, coffee, bagels and other finger snacks provided as a complimentary breakfast, thank you Dr. Jack & Alice. After a introduction Dr. Jack and his lovely and gracious wife, Alice gave us a tour of most of the 35 car collection. The recent prize winner was not out of the trailer yet. Great people and what a great facility. There will be another tour this fall so stay tuned and make plans to visit this great 'museum'. What a timely way to celebrate 50 years of the 911. More pics to follow.

Spring Breakout on May 18 - RSVP Today

Posted on May 3rd, 2013 8:14 PM by Allen Littlefield

26.jpg

Time to think about the upcoming Spring Breakout, our annual "coming out" for the driving season.

This year it will be held three weeks after the Club Race on Sat. the 18th of May. From noon until around 4.

HVR will provide grilled Sausage, dogs & burgers along with soft drinks and snacks. Bring your own beer if you would like along with a snack or something you would like to contribute. I usually bring a six pac and a bag of chips and pretzels (my personal vice!) cookies are also welcome. Also bring a folding chair as there is no seating at the Advanced Auto shop.

Advanced Auto is located on rte. 32 just south of the five corners in New Windsor NY. After the light for the Hannaford grocery store, keep to the left as the entrance is ahead on the left.

Tom & Gianni Florio have again agreed to graciously host the event so we give them double thanks for both hosting the Club Race and now the Breakout.

This is mainly members only. You can just drop by for a brief visit if you have other plans or stay for the duration. Either way hope to see many of you then. This is a great way for new members to meet the board and other P-car owners with similar interests. Also I should have the logo patches if they have arrived. They are $5 each so please bring correct change for the number have ordered.

Please RSVP on the Social Event Registration page of our store. Thank you!!!!

Paterek visit roundup

Posted on April 23rd, 2013 10:33 PM by Allen Littlefield

24.jpeg

Around 10 members journeyed down to the Paterek Bros. Restorations as per invitation issued after his appearance and presentation at our annual banquet. This was the annual Open House that the brothers hold and most of the attendees were members of Northern New Jersey region so it was nice that our region was included this year and we wish to thank John for the hospitality. Snacks were provided and visitors could tour the shop "complex" in Chatham, NJ. A number of restored and in progress cars were on display. John also went over some of the history of the cars on display and showed some of the things they find when stripping down a car for restoration.

A few photos of the event have been posted on our gallery. Please send us more if you have them.

Frank Staron has volunteered to lead a group from the park & drive area on the East side of the Kingston/Rhinebeck Bridge. They will leave Sat. morn. 10 am sharp. Area is on right hand side of road after you go through the first traffic light after crossing the bridge. Let us know if you would like to join this group so Frank knows who will be coming: aklon30@yahoo.com.

If anyone in the more southern parts of the region would like to volunteer to lead a group up to Lime Rock Park, please let us know where and when your contingent will rally from. Thanks and see you at the Advanced Auto tent in the lower paddock area.

Don't forget that next weekend, Sat. the 27th, is the Club Race at Lime Rock Park.

The region is hosting a lunch and place of respite for our attending members.

Still in the lower paddock on the right hand side but this year to the right of the big tree rather than on the left as in the past.

If you haven't contacted me yet with your intent to show up, please do as it is very helpful for ordering food.

Now all hope for a sunny warm day.

See you soon,

Details for drive to Paterek Bros. shop on April 14th - CORRECTED ADDRESS

Posted on March 29th, 2013 11:35 AM by Allen Littlefield

21.gif

If you want to travel as a group, at least somewhat what with the traffic on I-287, we will leave the Ramapo rest area off the thruway at 10am for the hour trip down to the shop. This is the last rest area before the cut off for I-287 south exit. Park as far from the bldg. as possible back near the trucks. I will repeat the address for you to use your GPS device or for Mapquest. I recommend this as we may get separated on the drive down as traffic can be heavy. Probably traveling in groups of less than five makes the most sense as I am sure we will become somewhat separated with traffic patterns.

The correct address for the shop is 13 Commerce St. Chatham, NJ.  33 Minton Ave is John's home addy.

His directions read as follows:  I-287 to NJ rte 24 east.  Exit 7 off of 24 onto River Rd.  Summit. Go 1.2 miles and turn right onto Commerce st. when the road curves.  Event opens at 1 pm.

If you would just rather meet us there that would be fine too. Maybe we have a few members that may want to take a different route down so I recommend you make arrangements for time and place to meet. I imagine we will return piece meal as some may have other pressing business later in the day. Light snacks will be served at NO COST! but you will not get a full lunch so be advised.

Do respond to me directly at: aklon30@yahoo.com and NOT to JODI!!! There are 26 already on the list to go so if you already let me know you don't have to reply again unless you know you can no longer make it. Now let us hope all our trips this year will be on dry pavement as we have been so lucky in the past. Until that time.

June 8th Trip to JLG Autocrib collection in CT

Posted on March 29th, 2013 11:14 AM by Allen Littlefield

20.jpg

We will leave for the hour trip to Brookfield CT to view the Porsche collection of Dr. & Alice Gish, JLG Autocrib. at 9:15am. The "Girls", as Alice puts it, will be open for our inspection in groups of 25. I need to develop a roster of attendees for this event so if you are interested please get back to me at: aklon30@yahoo.com I encourage you to visit www.jlgautocrib.com to get a preview of what we will be experiencing.

We will rally for the trip at the 84 diner, just off I-84, exit 12, 853 rte 52. You can see the diner on the right as you exit if coming across the Newburgh-Beacon bridge. If you are up early come and have breakfast before we head out. I will post the address of JLG Autocrib as soon as I have it.

At this point I don't know what kind of lunch arrangements we will have, if any. If something develops I will keep you informed. So now I just need to know who would like to be part of this event.

New HVRPCA Logo and site updates

Posted on March 18th, 2013 12:13 PM by Mark Browne

19.png

Our HVR logo has been updated to a new logo designed by Allen Littlefield and Mark Browne, and approved by the board. The now-classic "river" roundel will be retired, but is still available to anyone who is interested in a piece of HVR history. We've updated the site's look and feel to match the logo design.

Classic Logo / New Logo

Along with our new logo and look, there are some significant changes to the website:

  • HVRPCA Store - Merchandise printed or embroidered with our logo, with a portion of the proceeds going toward club events. There are over 250 items in the store and more will be added over time.
  • Member Classifieds - As part of the new store, we've added a classifieds page for cars, parts, or anything else you want to buy or sell. Create an account and get started!
  • Event Registration - For those of you used to emailing your RSVP to Allen, we've now got an event registration page that will simplify RSVPs and send you confirmations. HPDE registrations will still go through clubregistration.net. Events in the coming months will be added to the registration page. If you've already registered for an event with Allen there's no need to register again on the page.
  • Better organized, more content - We've added more content from the region as well as from Zone 1, PCA National, and other useful resources. Everything should be easier to find and more logially grouped.

Check the menu bar at top for links to these new resources. We welcome your feedback, and hope to hear from members who want to contribute new content. This is your site–help us make it the best region site in PCA!

Annual Picnic/Concours Update

Posted on August 27th, 2012 1:04 PM by Allen Littlefield

If you haven't already notified me and plan on coming to our annual picnic and Peoples Choice concours on Sept. 23, a SUNDAY, please do as soon as you are certain you will be able to attend.  This roster helps with the food planning, etc.

It will be held in the James Baird St. park in Dutchess county at the Eagles Nest restaurant. There is a convenient exit off the Taconic Parkway onto the Baird park grounds.  It will start at 12 noon and go until???  Below is the menu for the event and it is totally on the Hudson Valley Region, i.e., free food!!! to say nothing of the camaraderie of Porsche ownership.

We again will have trophies for the top three Peoples Choice concour winners.  This is where you vote for what you think are the top three cars in attendance at the event.  In the Past, region member Bart Dyshuck, has produced the trophies for the region  and we hope he will do so again.  Voting will be restricted to both member and assoc members only.  You can't bring all of your kids to vote for you...!!!  LOL!

The facility has indoor (real!) restrooms and a full bar.  We will be under the large semi permanent event tent just behind the Eagles Nest restaurant that enjoys a nice overlook due west over the golf course.

I encourage members from various parts of our region to plan group drives to the event.  Pat & I will be joining with the Eurichs at the Eagles Nest early to set things up so we will not be leading a group drive from the New Paltz area.  Just post where you will be leaving from and see if any members would like to join with you.

Septemeber is just around the corner and the 23rd will be here before you know it so plan now, even if it is "tentatively", for our major wind up event of the year.

Army Football Trip Cancelled

Posted on August 26th, 2012 1:26 PM by Allen Littlefield

Due to what I gather would be logistical security concerns getting cars on campus during such a large event prevents us from doing the tailgate party.  We hope next year we can possibly do a lunch/cruise from the point.  We will keep you posted.

Mills Mansion Event on October 21st

Posted on August 26th, 2012 1:24 PM by Allen Littlefield

The Mills Mansion car show is on for the 21st of October.  Ray & Linda Eurich are again running this event.  For particulars please email them at lindaeurich@optonline.net.  They are planning a breakfast/gathering place for a group drive to the site and possibly a meal out at a local steak house post event.  Go to www.staatsburgh.org to see the calendar of events.

Be sure to rsvp to the Eurichs as they need to submit a total car roster to reserve parking space.  This will be a great day out showing your P-car with club friends along with the 800 other cars on display.  A beautiful setting with beautiful cars.  A nice way to wrap up the summer.

Porsche World Roadshow

Some of our own HVRPCA members took part in the Porsche World Roadshow in early June, and had a chance to drive the new 991 and 981 at Monticello Motor Club.  Although there was a bit of rain, everyone in attendance was all smiles.

Porsche has kindly posted their event photos on the Porsche World Roadshow website.  Every current Porsche model was on hand, so there are lots of photos of the new 991 and Boxster.  Enjoy!

Trip to Norman Rockwell Museum

Posted on May 29th, 2012 12:29 PM by Allen Littlefield

7.JPG

On Sunday 10 June, HVR will be holding a trip to the Norman Rockwell Museum and then lunch at the Red Lion Inn all located in Stockbridge MA. This is in the heart of the scenic Berkshire Mts. and there are plenty of Antique shops and other galleries in and around the area which you can enjoy on the return trip if you so desire. We will be traveling through Great Barrington, MA which has a number of traffic lights so the group may be split up but we will wait on the other side of town. We will will take Rte.23 to Great Barrington, left on Rte. 7 thru town, right over the bridge, continue on Rte 7 and then left onto Rte. 183 to the Museum. There is pull over space on this side of town to gather the group together again if split up.

We will gather at the Martindale Chief Diner on rte. 23 just off the Taconic Parkway on the right side. We will leave there promptly at 10 and arrive the Museum 10:45ish. We will allow a hour and a half to enjoy the Museum before driving a short distance to Stockbridge proper where we will park behind the Red Lion Inn for lunch at 1pm. If we are early we have time to explore the shops and galleries in the immediate area or perhaps after lunch. I am including the address below for GPS purposes:

Martindale Chief Diner 1000 Rte. 23 Craryville, NY 12521

Norman Rockwell Museum #9 Rte. 183 Stockbridge, MA 01262

Red Lion Inn 30 Main St. Stockbridge, MA 01262

So far we have the Beckmanns, Mendelsonss, Klebaurs, Krizs, Clevenger, Eurichs, Challacombes and Littlefields. This amount qualifies us for a reduced admission at the Muesum. If anyone else wishes to join in please let me know as soon as possible so I can make accurate lunch reservations: aklon30@yahoo.com

My cell phone # is: 914-450-1480 Phone will only be turned on that morning and during the trip. Now let's hope the weather holds for us again as it did last year and so far... this year.

Spring Breakout Update

Posted on April 29th, 2012 12:57 PM by Allen Littlefield

4.jpg

On Sat. 12 May from noon until around 4ish, our Annual Spring Breakout will be again hosted by the Florio's at Advanced Auto just south of the 5 corners on rte. 32 in New Windsor NY. Dogs and burgers, snacks on the region. BYO beer. I always bring a 6-pac and some chips and pretzels to add to the bounty. I hear we are also have a secret recipe cole slaw on tap. We are always grateful to the Florio's for their generosity in sharing their facility with us plus all the rest they do for our region.

We will feature Dan Piperato's 550 Spyder replica. Dan will explain the build of the car and we will be able to view the car on a lift. This will be a treat for all those who are curios about replica cars in general and Porsche replicas specifically. We wish to thank Danny in advance for his offer to explain his car.

I will bring my "Little Wheezer" $30 Sears shop vac. and do a front radiator clean out for the Boxsters and 996 cars. I will also bring the plastic window polish for early boxster rear windows.

We will also have some door prizes and our first 50/50 drawing of 2012. Be sure to bring your tickets along. If you haven't already purchased yours and don't plan on it, please return them in the self stamped envelope provided. Our next drawing will be at our annual BBQ in the fall. You do NOT have to be present to win.

This gathering is a great way to introduce yourself to other members of the region, show your car, meet old friends and make new ones and generally have a nice P-car day. Let us know if you are planning to attend. Meanwhile, see you at the Club Race next Sat.

In addition you will have some of the first information about events sponsered by the club and get quick answers to any questions you may have.
